Summertime Self-Care: Embrace Creativity for Wellness

Writer: Leah<3Leah<3

Summertime offers the perfect opportunity to slow down, soak in the sunshine, and invest in some much-needed self-care. What better way to nourish your mind and spirit than through the artful practice of creativity? Engaging in artistic activities not only fosters relaxation but also enhances your overall well-being. Here are some inspiring ways to integrate artful self-care into your summer routine.

1. Nature Journaling

Summer is a time of vibrant colours and lush landscapes. Use this natural beauty as inspiration for a journaling session. Grab a sketchbook or a journal, head to your favourite outdoor spot, and start writing or sketching. Whether it’s a detailed drawing of a blooming flower, a watercolour landscape, or simply jotting down your thoughts, journaling in nature can be incredibly therapeutic. This practice allows you to connect deeply with your surroundings while expressing your inner self creatively. I recommend keeping a small travel sketch kit with you, this one works great! Comes with all the necessities:) This "Soul Therapy" self help journal would also be a great idea to bring along with you if you're more of a person that enjoys journal prompts or some sort of guide.

2. Crafting

Dive into some DIY craft projects that not only engage your hands but also your mind. Consider making your own candles with refreshing scents, maybe using the ceramic cups you made in reference to my How To:Ceramics From Home blog post;), or create personalized summer-themed decorations for your home. Macramé plant hangers, crochet pillow cases, or hand-painted flower pots can add a touch of warmth and summer to your space. Crafting is a wonderful way to focus your mind, reduce stress, and create something beautiful and functional.

3. Open-Air Painting/drawing Sessions

There’s something incredibly freeing about painting/drawing in the open air. Whether you’re at a beach, in a park, or simply in your backyard, set up a portable easel and let mother nature inspire you. The natural light, fresh air, and changing scenery can spark your creativity and make painting more of a meditative experience. Don’t worry about perfection; focus on the process and how it makes you feel. This type of open-air approach to your artistic practice can enhance your connection to the moment and foster a sense of calm and presentness. If you don't already have one, heres a great light weight portable easel. If this is too much of a stretch for you, consider grabbing that little sketch kit again to bring along with you instead.

4. Body Movement

Combine art and movement by exploring dance or yoga in a creative way. Dance freely to your favourite music, allowing your body to express itself without restrictions. Put on your headphones or turn on that speaker and dance like no ones watching. Alternatively, try a yoga session that focuses on fluid, artistic movements, perhaps incorporating elements of dance. This fusion of movement and creativity not only benefits your physical health but also boosts your mental and emotional well-being. Here is a great yoga kit to start with if you don't already have one, it comes with all the essentials!

5. Photography

Take advantage of the long summer days by embarking on photography adventures. Whether you’re using a professional camera or your smartphone, explore your surroundings and capture moments that resonate with you. Focus on different themes like sunsets, summer blooms, or candid moments of joy. Photography encourages mindfulness as you observe the world from new perspectives, finding beauty in everyday scenes. I also recommend taking your favourite images and making a collage vision board of the little moments you want to remember. Bonus points if its a physical collage vision board, get a little crafty with it!

6. Collaborative Arts

Art doesn’t have to be a solitary activity. Engage with friends or family in collaborative art projects. Host a summer art party where everyone contributes to a large mural, or organize a craft night where you all create individual pieces based on a common theme. A great project to do is that candle painting trend that is going around. Simply get a kit of different coloured tea lights, light them and paint designs with the coloured wax onto a white candle! It's cute, fun, personalized, and allows for more quality time with your friends and family. Collaborative art fosters connection, brings joy, and can be a wonderful way to spend quality time with loved ones.

This summer, make self-care a creative journey. By incorporating artful activities into your routine, you can enhance your well-being, reduce stress, and find new ways to express yourself. Whether through journaling, crafting, painting, movement, photography, or collaborative projects, let the season's beauty and energy inspire you. Embrace artful self-care and enjoy a summer filled with creativity and joy.🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞
