Mastering Wellness: Self-Care Practices for a Better You

Writer: Leah<3Leah<3

In today’s fast-paced hustle culture, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, forgetting to take care of ourselves along the way. As we navigate through our busy schedules, it’s crucial to remember the importance of self-care and wellness practices to maintain a healthy mind, body, and spirit. Nothing else exists but the present moment, so take advantage of the self awareness, consciousness, and presence that you are capable of existing in.

Self-care isn’t just about pampering yourself with bubble baths and face masks (although those can be part of it), it’s about implementing daily rituals and practices that nourish your overall well-being. By prioritizing self-care, you can improve your mental health, reduce stress, and increase your overall happiness. One way to embrace self-care is by mastering wellness in your own life. By practicing self-care rituals regularly, you can cultivate a better relationship with yourself and those around you. Here are a few simple self-care practices to help you become a Wellness Warrior:

  1. Mindfulness Meditation: Take a few moments each day to practice mindfulness meditation. Simply find a quiet space, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. This practice can help reduce stress and anxiety while promoting relaxation and clarity. Keep in mind that meditation takes PRACTICE, it is OK if you cannot quiet your thoughts right away, that is normal! Simply acknowledge the thoughts that are coming and let them go, try your best not to entertain them. As a beginner I highly recommend starting with some guided meditations. You can find these on podcasts, youtube, and self help apps such as calm, head space, and alo moves.

  2. Move Your Body: Whether it’s going for a walk, practicing yoga, or dancing to your favourite music, moving your body is essential for both your physical and mental well-being. Find an activity that you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine. If you find that you don't have time to schedule in a full workout or long walk, thats ok! Even dedicating 5-10 minutes each day to do some intentional stretching or a short yoga routine is a start, no matter how small that start is at least you are doing it! This yoga kit is a great beginner friendly kit to help you get started with all the necessary yoga equipment needed for you to try out some new yoga routines and workouts from home for optimal convenience and affordability as a beginner.

  3. Journaling: Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a powerful form of self-expression and reflection. Try setting aside time each day to journal about your day, your goals, or anything else on your mind. Having a journal with a habit tracker, mood tracker, gratitude list, or anything similar is a great way to start tracking your mental and emotional progress. I personally love the "Soul Therapy" journal by Jacqueline Kademian, licensed marriage and family therapist. Jacqueline takes more of a spiritual and holistic approach to self love and self help which really resonates with me, if that sounds like something you too would enjoy I defiantly recommend!

  4. Healthy Eating: Nourish your body with foods that make you feel good. Incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins into your diet to support your overall health and wellness. If you live in Canada I highly suggest taking a look at Odd Bunch, as groceries are only growing in price, it can be extremely hard to have a healthy balanced diet. Odd bunch delivers fresh produce to your home at a fraction of the price it would cost to buy the same items in the grocery store. Combating food waste in Canada, Odd Bunch sends out the food items rejected from groceries stores for not fitting "cosmetic" standards. I recently just started ordering from them and as a single person who's diet mostly consists of fruits and veggies, I can confidently say they have saved me so much money and I will forever recommend them!

  5. Rest and Relaxation: Prioritize getting enough sleep each night and allow yourself time to relax and unwind. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a bath, or practicing deep breathing exercises, giving yourself time to rest is essential for recharging your mind and body. Some before bed rituals I like to engage in include no screen time up to an hour before bed, reading/sketching, and most importantly meditating to help wind down and calm my mind. An essential item for me also includes valerian tea, as someone who struggles with falling asleep, valerian acts as a natural sedative which has been an enormous help in having a productive sleep schedule for myself without the need for any medications. This is the one I use daily, I have 2 tea bags before I sleep! Traditional Medicines Nighty Night Extra. I am not a medical professional so please consult your doctor if you have any questions or concerns regarding valerian root tea. In conclusion, please remember, self-care is not selfish – it’s necessary for your overall well-being. By incorporating these self-care practices into your daily routine, you can become a master of wellness and cultivate a better, happier you. So, take a moment for yourself today and start your journey towards a healthier, more balanced life. Paying more time and attention to your own well being will allow you to be a better friend, partner, relative, role model, and more to the people in your life.
